ICUC trainee obtains Sri Lanka Standards certification for his fruit products

Mr. Dhammika Perera, the owner of Tharindu fruit products at Kandy obtained the certification of Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) for 'Ready to Serve’ fruit drinks of Tharindu brand. The product range of this enterprise includes Ready To Serve (RTS) fruit drinks, cordial and jam from Annona species, bael, wood apple and mixed fruit. This award ceremony was held at the auditorium of Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) on 12th July 2006. The ceremony was attended by the Chairman and the Directors of SLSI, staff of Tharindu fruit products and their business customers, representative from International Centre for Underutilised Crops (ICUC), monks of Sri Thissarama temple at Kandy and several social associations of Kandy. The participants appreciated this young small scale entrepreneur’s effort and wished to develop his enterprise further.

Dhammika is one of the 500 entrepreneurs trained by ICUC on processing technologies of underutilised fruits such as jack fruit, sugar apple and bael during year 2004 and 2005. Addressing the award ceremony, Dhammika acknowledged the ICUC and Food Research Unit of Horticultural Research and Development Institute for their support to develop his small scale fruit processing enterprise. He also stated that the objective of his enterprise is to produce natural quality and nutritious fruit products. The importance of producing good quality fruit products was highlighted by all the speeches in this ceremony.
